Overview: Introduction – SME Cluster Dynamism: An Opportunity and a Challenge In the increasingly liberalized business environments now developing in almost all parts of the world, dynamic competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is to be achieved at the level of inter-acting cluster of enterprises, rather than that of the individual enterprise. There is a wide and growing body of evidence from both case1 developed and developing countries to show that groups of SMEs clustered together are better able than SMEs considered individually to grow rapidly, upgrade their skills, improve their productivity and technology, develop product niches, and gain access to distant markets. Their collective efficiently as a cluster exceeds that of individual enterprises.

A cluster is defined as a local agglomeration of enterprises (mainly SMEs, but often also including some larger enterprises), which are producing and selling a range of related or complementary products.
